Google review:
Before going to Kin Body and Sole to see Abby, I had suffered with five verrucas for over 10 years, I had tried many over the counter products, none of which worked. My feet had become a great source of embarrassment for me and I had lost hope that they would ever be normal and pain free. Abby was always reassuring and patient with me, without her it would still be painful to walk. I could not recommend Abby and Kin Body and Sole enough !!!

Treatment of corns and calluses
Corns and calluses are caused by a thickening of the skin that can soon become uncomfortable and, if left untreated, incredibly painful.
Corns and calluses are caused by hyperkeratosis this is a thickening of the outer layer of skin in response to repeated pressure or friction. This process leads to the compaction of skin cells, making the area harder and less flexible. Over time, this can result in localised pain and discomfort, particularly when walking or wearing footwear.
While they can be very uncomfortable and if left over time, very painful, they’re usually straightforward to treat and relieve.
These particular foot conditions occur when there is an increase in pressure or friction placed on certain points of the foot, compacting the surface layer of skin, causing it to swell and increase in thickness, which, over time, will become hard and brittle.
Note: A soft corn typically develops between the toes, where moisture is present. It appears white, has a rubbery texture, and can be extremely painful.
How can you treat corns and calluses?
- Debridement by a podiatrist – The removal of thickened skin using sterile instruments to provide immediate relief.
- Protective padding or orthoses – Use of silicone pads, toe separators, or custom orthotic devices to redistribute pressure.
- Keratolytic agents – Application of creams containing urea or salicylic acid (where appropriate) to break down thickened skin.
- Addressing underlying biomechanical issues – Assessment and correction of gait abnormalities to prevent recurrence.
- Moisture control – Particularly important for soft corns, to reduce maceration between the toes.
Are you struggling with an ingrown toenail?
Let us help.
Ingrown toenails are a common problem where the nail grows in an awkward position, causing it to grow into the skin. This can be extremely painful if not treated and typically occurs in your big toe, although it can happen in any toe.
Signs that you may have an ingrown toenail:
Toe and nail area is red, painful, swollen, and the toenail may begin to curl . An infection may be apparent if there are signs of pus, or the toe is hot to touch.
The area around the toe and nail may become red, swollen, and painful, with the nail beginning to curve into the surrounding skin. Infection may be indicated by pus, warmth, or increased tenderness.
Treatment for ingrown toenails:
- Soak feet in warm salty water to reduce the risk of infection
- Keep the toe dressed with a sterile plaster
- Wear comfortable and appropriate shoes
- Do not cut the toenail or pick the skin in the surrounding area
- Seek the support of a specialist podiatrist who can cut away part of the nail or even remove the whole nail if required.
Note: Foot conditions can be more serious if you have underlying health conditions such as diabetes, and in these instances, we advise you to speak with a professional.

Thickened toenails affecting your gait?
If toenails have become thick and discoloured, they can be difficult to cut. Often this happens if a fungal infection is present, the toenail has been impacted by an injury, or there is an underlying health condition.
Symptoms of a thickened toenail include a thick toenail, slight discolouration, toenail becomes brittle, and pain in your feet.
The best course of treatment is to seek advice from an ankle and foot specialist who can thin the nail using specialist tools, prescribe appropriate antifungal medications, advise on the best and most suitable footwear, and address any underlying medical conditions.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long will treatment be?
This is all dependent on your foot condition and how you respond to your individual treatment plan; however, our specialist podiatrist in York will work with you and talk through all treatments in depth.
What foot conditions do you treat?
We offer podiatry and chiropody, biomechanics and orthotics, nail surgery, and verruca and wart treatment. We also treat corns, callus, thickened nails, ingrown toenails, and fungal infections. Contact a chiropodist in York to discover how we can help keep your feet healthy and keep you moving.
Can I make an appointment directly, or does this have to be a referral?
At Kin Body and Sole, we accept both referrals from your GP or specialist, or you can book a consultation with us using the contact form online.
How can I protect my feet better?
Always maintain good foot hygiene, wear correct footwear at all times, keep feet dry, don’t share nail tools/equipment (avoid the spread of potential infection), and protect your feet as best as possible from injury.
